Research Seminar: 'Leading to Mental Health' with Professor Kevin Kelloway

This seminar is hosted by the Work, Employment, People and Organisations (WEPO) division at Sheffield University Management School.

Abstract: Leading to Mental Health

The suggestion that your wellbeing is affected by how your supervisor treats you would come as no surprise to any adult who has ever held a job.  However, the extent and nature of these effects often comes as a surprise – particularly to individuals who hold positions of organizational leadership.  I review a series of studying showing that leaders can be both the problem and the cure.  First, I review studies suggesting that leaders are the “root cause” of many organizational stressors.  Next, I review data showing that leaders can be an important and effective resource for employees who are in crisis.  In both cases, interventions targeted at developing leaders’ skills result in enhanced employee wellbeing.  These findings show the critical role of organizational leadership in occupational health psychology.
