Leadership Development Programme at Unlocked

Where: United Kingdom

Deadline: December 13, 2019

Type: Graduate

About the company:

Unlocked Graduates is a two year programme that is putting brilliant graduates and career changers at the heart of prison reform. At the moment, nearly half of all prisoners re-offend within a year of release, creating yet more victims, causing untold damage, and costing the UK more than £15bn. Our solution is a unique leadership programme where participants work as frontline prison officers while completing a fully-funded master’s degree in leadership. They support prisoners to turn their lives around, lead system change and develop the skills to excel no matter where they go in the future.

About the role:

Our award-winning two-year Leadership Development Programme will accelerate your development as an inspirational and supportive leader.

Summer Institute

The scheme kicks off with an intensive six week residential course where you will cover all elements of standard prison officer training as well as starting your Master’s studies. This will include one week of prison-based learning. You will receive full salary and all accommodation costs will be covered.

You will be assigned an experienced prison officer as a mentor for the duration of the programme. Your mentor will be on site at your prison for two days a week to assist with your continual professional development.

Master’s degree

As part of the programme you will complete a fully-funded, bespoke Master’s degree. Drawing on the latest research in the field, and led by top academic experts, your studies will give you the chance to step back from the day-to-day and learn the theory to drive system change on the frontline.

Work placement

We offer an optional work placement in your second year where you can use your skills in a different environment, choosing between a wide range of corporate organisations, public sector bodies and charities.

Policy paper

You will have the opportunity to write a policy paper which will be delivered to the Ministry of Justice. This is a unique opportunity to have system-wide impact across the country. The policy paper will be separate from, but may draw on, your Master’s dissertation.

The future

Our commitment to your development doesn’t end when the two years are over. Our team and alumni network will support your next steps – whether you decide to stay and advance within the prison system, or seek career opportunities elsewhere.

  • Have, or be expecting to receive, at least a 2:1 undergraduate degree qualification by July 2020 or equivalent*
  • Grade C GCSE English and Maths
  • Have the right to work in the UK for the duration of the programme (two years)

The Unlocked two-year leadership development programme is available to graduates who have not yet undergone prison officer training, therefore existing prison officers are not eligible to apply.

You do not have to have specific knowledge or experience of the prison service to apply. Instead, we are looking at your potential to be a part of the programme to make an impact on prisoners’ lives.
